For more than 54 years, the American Diabetes Association flagship journal, "Diabetes", has published original research results and expert opinion on diabetes mellitus and related diseases. For over 15 years, the journal has invited recognized experts in diabetes research to "think out loud" and state their thoughts and dreams on how to stop this insidious disease. These unique articles are published in a section called Perspectives in Diabetes. In this book, 39 original Perspectives' authors look back and critique their original work published between 1988 and 1992. They not only highlight advances in the research described in the articles, but also review their own predictions. Each commentary is accompanied with the original "Diabetes" article. This book offers a rare opportunity for authors to critique their own work and see how predictions and research priorities are viewed in the context of passing time and research progress. The reprints of the original articles accompany the current commentaries. It is the first of a three volume set. Subsequent volumes will cover years 1993-1997 (Volume 2) and 1998-2002 (Volume 3).
